REUTERS\/Jos\u00e9 Luis Gonz\u00e1lez\/Archivo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/authors\/stefanie-eschenbacher\/\">Stefanie Eschenbacher<\/a> \/ REUTERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CIUDAD DE M\u00c9XICO, 19 dic (Reuters) &#8211; M\u00e9xico emiti\u00f3 emisiones \u00abextremas\u00bb de cantidades de metano de un gasoducto de gas natural que atraviesa su estado fronterizo norte\u00f1o, Durango, en 2019, seg\u00fan mostr\u00f3 un\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2310797120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">art\u00edculo de investigaci\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0publicado el martes, citando datos recopilados por sat\u00e9lites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El metano, un potente gas de efecto invernadero que atrapa el calor en la atm\u00f3sfera y calienta el planeta mucho m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido que el di\u00f3xido de carbono en el corto plazo, se considera una de las principales amenazas para el clima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cient\u00edficos de la Universidad de Harvard, dirigidos por Marc Watine y Daniel Varon, identificaron un punto caliente en Durango que liber\u00f3 miles de toneladas m\u00e9tricas de metano en dos meses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watine dijo que el equipo pudo rastrear las fugas de metano al gasoducto El Encino-La Laguna que pasa por los estados de Chihuahua y Durango, transportando gas natural desde Estados Unidos a M\u00e9xico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abNuestro an\u00e1lisis muestra que hubo emisiones de varias partes diferentes del oleoducto entre abril y mayo de ese a\u00f1o\u00bb, afirm\u00f3. Watine dijo en una entrevista. \u00abNo todo provino de un solo lugar\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El 12 de mayo de 2019, se liberaron entre 260 y 550 toneladas de metano por hora desde un lugar, por un total de 1.130 a 1.380 toneladas en tres horas, descubrieron los cient\u00edficos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No estaba claro qu\u00e9 caus\u00f3 las emisiones ni qu\u00e9 empresa fue responsable de ellas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Documentos gubernamentales mostraron que el oleoducto, propiedad de la el\u00e9ctrica estatal CFE, es operado por Fermaca Pipeline El Encino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CFE no respondi\u00f3 de inmediato a una solicitud de comentarios y no figuran detalles de contacto en documentos p\u00fablicos de Fermaca Pipeline El Encino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los cient\u00edficos han dicho que las empresas mexicanas, incluida la energ\u00e9tica estatal Pemex, est\u00e1n retrasadas en sus&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/mexican-energy-companies-lag-methane-emission-rules-investigators-say-2023-01-25\/\">obligaciones de identificar, informar y mitigar las emisiones<\/a>&nbsp;de su infraestructura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En septiembre de 2022, otro grupo detect\u00f3&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/exclusive-scientists-detect-second-vast-methane-leak-pemex-oil-field-mexico-2022-09-02\/\">dos fugas de metano de la infraestructura de Pemex<\/a>&nbsp;en el conjunto de campos petroleros Ku-Maloob-Zaap en el Golfo de M\u00e9xico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El metano, el componente principal del gas natural, es invisible e inodoro.
